Basic Cruising Course for Adults

The ABYC Keelboat Course is a beginner level, internationally recognized Sail Canada program. Classes, which are scheduled at various times during the week and on weekends,provide both off- and on-water instruction and are designed to give students the necessary skills to act as both skipper and crew on a sailboat of up to 35 feet in length, in moderate weather conditions. The course is taught on a 25 ft. keelboat and is ideal for new sailors.

The fee includes a one-year Introductory Associate Membership at ABYC with all privileges.

Features:

  • 27 hours of instruction (on-the-water and classroom)
  • Sail Canada textbook and pre-course package
  • Logbook and Sail Canada seal
  • Taught by Sail Canada certified instructors

Includes boat handling under sail, safety equipment and procedures, basic weather and chart reading, reefing and knots, man-overboard procedures, terminology, powering in restricted waters, anchoring and docking, rules of the road.

Students have the option of writing the Pleasure Craft Operator’s Card exam during their course. (There is an additional fee for the PCOC.)

Requirements

1. You must have a properly fitting Department of Transportation approved life jacket. (Bring to class) This may be purchased through a local boating supplies store or outdoor sporting goods store which carries boating equipment.
2. Required clothing:

  • deck shoes or white-soled running shoes
  • windproof/waterproof jacket or foul weather gear
  • sun hat
  • soft-sided bag with extra warm clothes

INTRODUCTORY KEELBOAT CO-OP OPPORTUNITY FOR KEELBOAT PROGRAM GRADUATES

ABYC is providing the opportunity for graduates of the Adult Keelboat Program to continue their sailing and fine-tune their sailing skills in the summer they graduate. If certified by the instructor, graduates may sail the two C&C25 co-op keelboats. The low cost of the Introductory Co-op Program membership depends on when the student joins. A training session to familiarize you with the boats will be provided with the membership. We want you to keep sailing!!

It is suggested you sign up as soon as possible, as space is limited. If you do not qualify, all your fees will be refunded.

New Youth Keelboat Program

Monday, July 4 – Friday, July 8 2016
9:00 am – 4:00 pm

This program is for youth ages 13 – 18 who want to try sailing for the first time or who already have some sailing experience either in keelboats or in dinghies. A hands-on program aboard a Flying Tiger 7.5m sport boat.Upon successful completion students may obtain one of three Sail Canada certifications: Start Keelboat Sailing; Basic Crew; or Basic Cruising standard.
